There’s no question that we’re living through a time of immense uncertainty. Many academics are understandably exhausted, anxious, and wary of what may be lurking around the next corner. Maintaining focus and well-being has become both more difficult and more essential than ever.

Unfortunately, many of the people I speak with feel as though they’ve tried everything they can think of, and they still can’t escape the overwhelm or persistent sense that they’re never doing enough. To me, that’s a sign that we need to move beyond time management and productivity strategies and toward something deeper: cultivating the inner skills and resources that allow us to sustain both ourselves and our work in the world.

Explore the 10 keys

  • Build awareness

    KEY #1

Becoming aware of our internal experience—including our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations—is a vital first step in any process of personal or professional growth.

  • Cultivate self-compassion

    KEY #2

Genuine validation, offered through compassionate listening and sincere presence, serves a healing and protective function, allowing us to process pain in a safe and supportive setting.

  • Exercise agency

    KEY #3

Knowing that we have choices can be liberating even if those choices have undesirable consequences, and we often have more options than we realize.

  • Celebrate your (true) self

    KEY #4

To celebrate ourselves, we need to engage with ourselves in loving and respectful ways, joyfully honoring all that we bring to the world.

  • Nurture connections

    KEY #5

Extensive research highlights the important role social support plays in our health and well-being. Positive relationships can reduce stress, foster a sense of belonging, and strengthen our ability to withstand difficulties.

  • Deepen trust

    KEY #6

Trusting in what we know about ourselves is key to operating in ways that work for us. The only way to really do something well is to do it our own way.

  • Establish boundaries

    KEY #7

When we’ve established guardrails based on our values and goals, there’s no danger of veering too far off track. This frees us to take healthy risks and explore new avenues, fueling creativity and innovation.

  • Practice real self-care

    KEY #8

We’re all familiar with flight attendants’ instructions to put on our own oxygen mask before helping others. The question is, how often do we actually do that? And what forms does our oxygen mask take?

  • Prioritize gratitude

    KEY #9

Gratitude has been linked to an increase in positive emotions, which in turn broadens our perspective and further builds our inner resources.

  • Dare to dream

    KEY #10

What if we started by simply taking a deep breath and giving ourselves space to imagine a life without all the restrictions, a life in which we can be exactly who we want to be?
